An hour later we were in the driveway of Dean O'Bryan. Golden sunlight washes over the jagged peaks of crumbling badlands buttes, a partly cloudy periwinkle sky above. He talked about grazing grasses, poisonous grasses, nitrogen-rich grasses, and root-bound grasses. The 133,300 acres of the Stronghold District were added to Badlands National Monument in 1976, prior to the monument becoming a park in 1978. The Badlands isn't well documented as a lot of it is actually Wilderness Area, and in particular the South Unit (where Palmer Creek is located) is really poorly documented, compared to many other national parks. Clouds crept over the horizon and the birdsong picked up. For years, there have been talks about potentially developing Badlads South as the first tribal national park. Dependent on prairies as their prime habitat and prairie dogs as their food source, these relatives of weasels are among the rarest mammals on Earth. A gunnery and bombing range was established on OST land in 1942 shortly after America entered World War II. I parked there and a friend gave me a ride to the Northwest corner of the unit, near the Red Shirt community. The South Unit of Badlands National Park is an oddity, having been born of an administrative decision that incorporated a large tract of Indian-owned land into a national park in a rather heavy-handed manner. ''Look for a set of mailboxes. People from around the world do veer off the famous Badlands loop road to explore its outer edges. Badlands Park has less than 30 miles of paved roads; much of the access to the more remote and beautiful regions is via primitive roads. While a cursory glance at the map may leave a visitor with little excitement due to the lack of trails, there are off-trail countless routes through this rugged land that will instill a great awe for this Bad land. My subsequent visits have provided a greater insight into the scientific importance of the Badlands, and to the wondrous backcountry scenery that exists in this park. About a quarter mile in, this second road climbed atop a hill yielding spectacular 360 views of the badlands and a lucky group of free-range mustangs. It is operated by an energetic woman named Nellie Cuny, who has lived in the area all her life -- how long that is exactly she won't say, though she will confess to being a grandmother a few times over. Though the bison-hunting Lakota flourished during the next 100 years, their dominion on the prairie was short-lived. ''Go a few miles west of the cafe,'' said Nellie. Your correspondent started early, as local dawn fog mingled seamlessly with traveling haze. This particular area is also home to the Oglala Lakota Sioux. Backcountry permits are currently not needed in this park, but it is recommended that adventurers stop by the Ben Reifel Visitor Center and score some beta from one of the parks backcountry rangers before heading out. At first the road cut through a treeless expanse of grasslands so vast we could watch the patterns of the wind playing out in the swaying fields. The sky was huge and bright. At the top, a light rain was falling and I quickly found the spring, aided by GPS of course. The park's bison live in this area and have created many game trails which are easy to follow from overlook parking areas or Sage Creek Campground. It includes the 64,000-acre Badlands Wilderness Area, Badlands Loop Road with scenic overlooks and trailheads, and Cedar Pass, where you will find the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, open year-round, and Cedar Pass Lodge, open seasonally. It is also recommended that wilderness campers take along a compass and topographical map (available from Trails Illustrated, 800-962-1643, and from the visitors center). Hiking off-trail across the South Unit is not without its hazards, and making your own way up and down plateaus like Cuny Table is one of them. I brought the basic camping supplies, four liters of water, a map and an iPhone 6S with the Gaia GPS app. When you drive the Badlands Loop Road, you will find overlooks and signs explaining the landscape. I marked the coordinates on Gaia and made it my rough half way point so I wouldnt have to carry as much water. Use caution. Stronghold and Palmer Creek Units -- These areas are located within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. It is important to follow these few rules to preserve the park's wonders. The established hiking trails, though short, are perfectly situated -- the Door Trail, which begins three miles from the visitors center, wends through a ''door'' in the Badlands Wall and deposits you in the midst of the formations.
